A praying mantis and its reflection scale a Broad Street window in Downtown Gadsden on Monday Morning July 28, 2008. “The praying mantises are out right now, and this time of year they are feeding, and feeding well. The glass is an especially good place for them. The lights draw insects there are they are able to feed easily.” said Dr. George Cline a Biology professor at JSU. Mantids are tropical or subtropical insects. There are many native species in the South, but the most common species in the North are those that have been introduced from Europe or China. They’re ambush predators, and they’re very good to have around to keep down garden pests. Like black widow spiders, females may kill the male during reproduction. Gadsden Times Photo by Eric T.
