A year’s work

Every year in newspapers across the country people start scurrying around working, searching and stressing out. It certainly isn’t the daily deadline crunch, no they handle that daily, deftly and with remarkable aplomb. No this is contest season. I don’t care for it becuase of the associated dramam and worrying and overanalyzing. The judging and assembling and waiting wears on me. I do however enjoy the chance to take a look back at my year’s work and reflect on what worked and what didn’t. I don’t really put much stock in contests and I realy only care about the resume line and monetary awards. I don’t need any plaques or trophies.

As have been searching for photos and perusing assignment logs and folders I started to take down some numbers to gauge the work I did in a purely quantifiable way. Some of you may know what it is like working as a newspaper photojournalist, others may have only heard stories and complaints. It is a hurried and harried existence-but ultimately incredibly rewarding so here are the numbers for 2008.

  • 557 Assignments shot
  • 5072 Edited Photos
  • 259 Working Days
  • 89,241 files shot
  • I’ll put up my contest entries when I get them done… For now back to the mines.

    Vegetblarian Challenge Day 2:

I forgot lunch-which means I probably had coffee for lunch and I had Pesto Pasta and a salad for Dinner.
The town was out of fresh Basil so we had the next best thing to homemade Pesto and that is Classico Pesto-for that Authentic Eye-talian flavor
At this point the recipe for both the pasta and the salad get complicated-But I’ll give it a try.

    Pesto Pasta
Boil some water and add the pasta to the boiling water.
Cook until done, not goopy, just done.
    Drain the pasta
    Toast some pine nuts.
Open the jar of authentic home style pesto
Apply the pesto, toasted pine nuts and some grated asiago( or other appropriate dry cheese)
    Mix.

    Apple Walnut Salad.
    Chop up 1.5 Fuji Apples
Coat the Apples with lemon juice.
    Toast a handful of walnuts.
Open a bag of pre-washed salad.
    Mix all of these ingredients
serve with a salad dressing of your choice- I had a balsamic vinaigrette
