There is a feeling that is a beautiful cocktail of elation, exhaustion and accomplishment that newspapers give me. It is a sensation of knowing that I have created something honest and valuable and that I have done what seems insurmountable (if only to me).
Its a feeling I get after working late into the evening on a breaking news event or as I walk down the stairs past the press spitting out papers after a night of football games or after logging out of the video editing bay after uploading a particularly well done video story. I don’t know if I can state it better than Julius Caesar “Veni, Vidi, Vici.”
Today as I walked out of the office and down the ramp into a beautiful Alabama afternoon I felt vindicated. I’m entering a new world and i’m trying to be as brave as I can be about it. This week was a long, exhaustive week but ultimately I feel fulfilled. The newspaper business may be crumbling around me and others like me, but as I walked out into that golden sunlight and sultry breeze I know that I am doing what I can do.
It may not be as simple as shooting some great photos and hustling around the city to shoot 10 assignments but if the industry falls it wont be because of me.

Longleaf pine saplings, a native conifer that has recently struggled, are being given away by Finlayson Landscape Design of Southside in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day. Hmm those Finlayson Landscape Design people are pretty swell.
